life at Ruth HAUS . fall 2012

December 1, 2012

DSC_0557so i’ve been a resident of ruth haus co-op for a little over a month and have settled into the routine quite nicely. yes i live with 14 roommates and yet sometimes i’ll come home between classes or after work and be the only one home. on other occasions, i’ll come home to a house full of homemade dinner and voices. here are some every day sort of pictures from Ruth.

DSC_0559this was our first OFFICIAL dinner together as a co-op.

DSC_0566i’ve had so many people ask me about our labor system. here it is in a nutshell. we have a labor czar who makes sure our house stays clean – our bellies full – and our co-op an over all enjoyable place to call home. each member of the house has 4-5-6 (?) hours of labor to complete a week. for example, my labor each week is to clean the first floor bathroom // cook dinner on tuesdays // wash dishes and clean the kitch on thursdays // as well as represent our house on the HAUS level board  and be the house’s membership coordinator.

DSC_0626last night there was a performance art performance (is that how you describe it ?) and it seemed like our WHOLE house was there. not even kidding. actually … let me count it out in my head real fast … ok 11 out of the 15 were there. anyway i made makenzie take a picture to prove it. and actually, if you substitue evan in for margaret and david c in for moses and andrew in for that random photo bomber guy with the hat – and of course add another becca, shaun, scotty, and amanda. that’d be ALL of us.

DSC_0559this is our new mail box, look right.

DSC_0563and here are some roommates making beer. it’s not totally done yet, and i don’t even like beer, but its exciting none the less.

saturday craft fairs galore

November 28, 2012

last weekend my other bff halie was in town and we spent most of saturday craft-fairing around houston. she’s from here but currently lives in kansas (she’s a KU-er) and was happy to be home for a few days. first stop was the post-thanksgiving re-market. i think mike and paloma are just one of the cutest MARRIED couples i have ever seen and GO THEM for organizing these monthly re-markets.

i ran into some rosalie haus-ers and we decided, on the spot, to rent our own booth for the january market. it’s that exciting! (and sneaky me i’m posting it on the internet so now everyone will know and we’ll have to do it, very “sneaky mom” of me and also very smart). next we went to the HOUSTON HOLIDAY POP SHOW at the summer street studios and it was SO COOL.

*all black n’ white pictures courtesy of halie. she was taking some for her photography class and you know me with my camera, and well, i’m just now thinking about how COOL we must have looked snapping all these pictures and all. NOT.

look at stacey representing the zine table and lookin cute, and yep makenzie was selling some too.

although the selection was SUPERB and prices were way reasonable, neither halie or I found anything we like had to have. so we didn’t buy anything. whamp whamp. see you at the next pop show. andwelovehouston. and btw we went to another craft fair in the heights  later that afternoon and although the stuff was cool it was an older and pricier crowd, so we just ate the free food and left.

houston’s black friday walmart protest

November 24, 2012

so, this black friday i went to the yale st. walmart protest. and, it was pretty cool. i’m so proud of houston for jumping on the walmart protest bandwagon. the group was filled with quite a few familliar faces ifyouhavntnoticedyet houstonisaprettysmalltowninner610loop andalotofgroupsoverlap. so there were some free radicals and fnb friends. over all i thought there was a pretty decent turn out and lots of powerful signs and faces.

the best part, in my opinion, was when a walmart 18 wheeler  truck drove past. there was EXTRA yelling at that point. besides that,  just lots of honking. one group represented was NOW (national organization for women). I don’t know much about them, but i got put on their mailing list. and if you want to learn more, check out their FACEBOOK.

houston events calendar: november 20 – 25, 2012

November 20, 2012

so sorry these are a day late. yesterday was filled with geology tests // lessons plans // mock-kindergarten presentations // and then a super sweet low-key and wholesome ruth haus game night. before we get to this weeks events, check out some pictures from the party you all missed as a result of me not posting the events calendar earlier. we started with dinner and then dominoes + a big ol’ game of “werwolves”. wich is one of those group mafia sorta games. turns out scott gregory + cory + sean were the werwolves. mak was the fortune teller and me and tony were just towns people. it was like so fun.
