welcome home: Ruth HAUS, houston’s newest co-op

November 3, 2012

i’ve finally settled down in my new co-op. i’m an official Ruth HAUS member and planning to live with my 14 roommates for the next 1+ year. before i share my “new bedroom sneak peak” let me answer some FAQ’s about Ruth HAUS living: HAUS stands for Houston Access to Urban Sustainability, so we’re not just a bunch of like minded hippies living together, we actually have all signed a sustainability pledge to making our lifestyles as green as possible. we have 16 bedrooms (one is rented out as a suit though, so just 15 of us). we have 8 bathrooms, 1 washer/dryer/clothesline. we eat meals together 5 nights a week. and share labor responsibilities like washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms. and so far, so SWEET. i love it here.

this is what my bedroom looked like 3 months ago. the floors were covered in paint splatters, there was an extra door, and there was some wall paper trim, not to mention all the random holes.

lots of cleaning and painting and more cleaning and waiting and cleaning and well, its livable. in fact its more than livable – its perfect.

check back later this week for a “sneak peak: dena’s Ruth HAUS bedroom” edition. if you’re secretly really nosey and like looking at how stranger’s live there everyday life you’ll LOVE it.
